Have a Blast in the Past

Great Scott, NowThen!

I'm practically screeching up to you in plumes of smoke and jumping out of my time-traveling DeLorean because we've just made it a lot easier for you to access your past photos.

We've always had the Archive Calendar available so you can look at pics from a specific date in time, but based on your feedback, we've added really easy-to-navigate "previous" and "next" links at the top and bottom of the home page and user profiles.

It's now a lot faster for you to go back and forth in time and enjoy the "Then" as much as the "Now" (hardee har har)!

Anymore feedback for us? Send us your thoughts!

And gun it to 88!
Erin

PS - this is the first and definitely last time I'll reference "Back to the Future" so much.

NowThen's Extreme Makeover

Hello friends!

I feel like NowThen's been in one of those 'ugly-duckling-turned-swan' teen movies because (as our regulars will notice) it's got a hot new look and feel!

But even though NowThen's taken off its thick horn-rimmed glasses, traded in its ill-fitted clothing and shaken out its tightly-bunned hair, it's still got the same fantastic features at heart (and more):

- MMS/email a mobile pic just once to NowThen and we'll blast it straight to the phones of all of your friends around the world for FREE!

- Free, unlimited storage for all of your mobile photos in a personal account as you send them

- Create friend groups and manage pic privacy to decide who can view your photos

- Automatically updated widgets for your blog, site and social networks (like MySpace, Facebook)

- and lots, lots MORE (didn’t I say that already?)

So register (if you haven't yet), explore and be sure to invite your friends!

Seriously, it's time to dust off your camera phone photos, share them and start snapping more every day! Take advantage of this awesome service 

Enjoy and send us any feedback you have!

Take care and keep snapping,
Erin

PS - For posterity, in case anyone forgets what the old site looked like, see it here.

Oh Happy Day for the UK

Happy New Year everyone!

We’re ringing in the New Year with great news for our UK users - you can once again send MMSes and SMSes to 07983 111 222 and have them appear on nowthen.com and to the mobiles of your friends and family!

Sorry for the delayed maintenance time, but our UK service will now be much more reliable to ensure that your flashy snaps and witty captions always make it to the site and phones of your mates.

I’m sure you’ve all taken some amusing and charming photos of the holiday spirit (and possibly debauchery), so go ahead and send away!

To ALL of our users, stay tuned for lots of fantastic changes to the site!

Take care,
Erin

Ho, ho... doh!

Hi UK members,

Happy holidays!

As you've probably noticed the service updates are taking longer than expected (probably as a result of the holiday season slowing things down). Again, I will keep you all posted of when it's back up and running so you can MMS pictures in.

Til then, upload your holiday pics directly from nowthen!

Peace out and Good Will toward men,
Erin

UK MMS downtime for 24-48 hours

A heads up for our beloved users in the UK: we have phone service downtime scheduled for the next 24-48 hours. This means that, for the duration of the maintenance, any MMSes or SMSes you send to 07983 111 222 will not make it to nowthen.com or to any of your friends’ mobiles.

The good news is that this downtime is a result of us currently upgrading our UK phone service, ensuring more reliable service for the future!

And don’t forget that you can still send pics and texts from nowthen.com! Just login and click on the “Post” button. From there you can upload pics from your PC and/or broadcast text messages to your network of friends.

For status updates, keep checking this blog.

Sorry for any inconvenience!

Make any photo your profile image

We’ve also added a new feature that lets you turn any of your nowthen pics into your featured profile image.

Just go to your ‘Me’ page and click on the picture-framed silhouette icon () next to your photo of choice. It’ll then become your current profile pic!

Toggle that picture slideshow!

You know you wanna.

After logging in, you’ll see that we’ve added a drop menu on the main page that lets you toggle the view mode of the horizontal slideshow. If you choose, you can just view photos sent by people in your network of friends on the front page. It’s like reserving a VIP section for your friends – only “VIP section” equals the wicked side-scrolling slideshow, and “your friends” equals their nowthen pics.

Use this photo filter to:

- view only photos by you and your friends

- view only your photos

- view only pictures from your groups

Of course, if you’re feeling particularly sociable, you can always continue viewing public photos from other nowthen users!

Temporary system maintenance

A heads up that on Sun, Nov 4th, we'll be undergoing system maintenance beginning at 5:30am Pacific Time.

Fortunately, the site will still be up and running, the only features that will be effected are:

- MMSing new pictures to the US number

- text messaging (including receiving new picture alerts and comments via phone)

- new user registration (sorry, n00bs)

Using picture mail and uploading pics from nowthen will still be working!

Sorry for any inconvenience. We hope to have it up and running again as soon as possible!

Have a good weekend,

Erin

A feature for the morning after - edit photo visibility

Have you ever sent a scandalous picture to nowthen and, after sobering up, wished you could retroactively make it visible only to friends or certain groups?

Well, we’re all about second chances here, so you can now adjust who can view your photos after you’ve sent them. Just go to your ‘Me’ page (http://www.nowthen.com/user) and click on the little padlock icon () next to the photo of your choice. From there you can decide whether or not to make it visible to friends only, groups only, or entirely private or public.

Hello all-

Due to popular demand, we now provide RSS feeds at nowthen! You no longer need to worry about missing posts or comments from your fellow cool-cat nowtheners.

You just need an RSS reader (e.g., Feedreader) in order to automatically receive regular updates on the most recent pics and texts coming into nowthen!

As a nowthen member, you can choose from 3 different types of RSS feeds:

1) Latest public posts to nowthen.com – [available on nowthen’s home pg]

2) Latest public comments to nowthen.com – [available on nowthen’s home pg]

3) Individual user feeds – [links available at any public user’s profile]

Also, if your posts are public, you can share your personal RSS feed (URL found at your "Me" pg) with friends so they can tune into your most recent photo adventures.

Enjoy!

In Memoriam

It’s a given that so many of us nowtheners enjoy using the service to share our camera phone pics of funny or amazing images. But dead animals??

That’s right - it’s a macabre trend that has cropped up among our international network of nowthen users. Aussie kangaroos, English field mice, California road kill – it’s a sensation that’s sweeping the nation(s).

The pictures have even generated a tag called "deadanimal" and its contributors find themselves welcome members of the “Dead Animal Appreciation Society” (DAAS). I’ll be the first to admit this isn’t a theme that we at nowthen HQ expected to see!

Fear not animal rights activists, at the heart of the trend is respect - if not a twinge of sadness - for the poor fallen animals. It’s not every day that we come across dead critters (at least I should hope not), so I understand why people are inspired to capture the rare images on their handy camera phones.

DAAS ist gut, jah?

digging nowthen.com

Hello all!

Some of you may have noticed that nowthen.com was down for some time on the morning of April 10th (PST). We’re sorry to those of you who were trying to reach the site at that time. Luckily, our tech team worked their magic and got the site up and running as soon as possible so nowthen is back up and available for your viewing pleasure!

There’s a silver lining to all of this! It turns out that the problem was caused by a massive surge in traffic from digg.com (a popular site where people can find and recommend news, pics, videos, etc.). Apparently, one of our beloved users, BunnyWabbi, sent a photo of a funny political bumper sticker over the weekend and that ended up generating over a thousand ‘diggs’ (or recommendations). His pic also ended up sparking a political debate at digg. Suffice to say that at the time, wee little nowthen just wasn’t prepared for the clamoring of visitors coming to see the photo and the bumper sticker’s message.

Never fear, to prevent this from happening again in the future, we’ve just purchased 10 shiny new servers to allow for heavier visitor traffic (think that's enough?).

In related news, a couple of weeks ago we also experienced hundreds of hits when JeremiahCh’s photo of the Hollywood Hills fire made it to digg. He sent the picture as the fire was happening and it was a great instance of citizen journalism!

Check out Jeremiah’s photo and ‘digg it’ from here.

Well done, guys! We're ecstatic to see these photos getting recognition from the online community. It just goes to show that camera phone pics are definitely worthy of being shared and enjoyed rather than stuck in your phone! Be sure to continue inviting your friends and using your mobile phones to capture and share the interesting things you see in your day-to-day life. You never know how much it may interest others who see it!

Keep snapping and sharing!
The nowthen team

We love Yeti, yes we do. We love Yeti, how 'bout you?

Hi nowtheners!

The nowthen team is loving all of your pics/contributions. We hope you're enjoying yourselves too - keep inviting your friends to join in on the fun!

I'd like to spotlight a very amusing and clever nowthener: Yeti!

Ok, so he's a bit of a photo saboteur, but what do you expect from a Yeti?

Keep an eye out for Yeti's work on nowthen and see the YetivsGnome blog for his animated shorts.

Thanks and auuuggggh!, Yeti, for your light-hearted and fun pics on nowthen. We can't wait to see more!

Tag! You're it!

So you've been taking wicked pics and sending them to the site. But have you been tagging them with keywords?

Well, HAVE YOU? *ahem*

Tagging will make your pics easily searchable and incorporate them with other similarly-tagged pics from the community.

To do so just click on any picture (yours or your fellow nowtheners) and use keywords to describe it in the "Add a tag" box.

Check out these nowthen tags for examples of the end result:

rainbow | food | dead animal | sunset

Pretty nifty, eh?

So...what tags do your pics fall under?

A merry little nowthen moment

I was having dinner w/a friend in San Francisco last Friday at Maykadeh (this great Persian place). I love the food there, but it sort of looked like...erm, fecal matter, so I sent this pic to nowthen.

A while later I got a call from one of my college friends who lives 80 miles away.. I don't see her nearly as often as I'd like, but she is a fellow nowthener. Still, I was surprised to see her number pop up, so I answered my phone (what a polite dinner mate I am!):

"Are you where I think you are?" she asked. I brought her to this restaurant last summer and she'd obviously gotten my pic to her phone.

"Yes, I'm at Maykadeh, aren't you jealous? The food is sooo good and I'm stuffed." (I'm pretty much a brat).

"Well, don't leave yet because I've got reservations there and will be there in 20 mins!"

Say whaaaat? So crazy and so, so rad too.

I ended up staying after our bill had been paid to wait for her to show up. She finally did (with another friend whom I'd also not seen in ages), and we were able to catch up!

Serendipity? Ok, not really. More like an example of nowthen kicking fantastic arse and being useful in a way that even I wouldn't have predicted!

After all, had my friend not received my pic to her phone she never would've thought to call me. Plus, I never would have stayed later at the restaurant once my bill was paid -- we would've been like two lonely ships passing in the night.

Well, luckily for me, things worked out just fine in the end. I had a wonderful reunion with old friends on a Friday night in the city.

Good on ya, nowthen - thanks!

nowthen - brand new features, same fab site

Hey nowtheners!

nowthen is souped up with new fun features and is ready to be spread like wild dandelion fluff, so invite your friends and family!

Don't get us wrong, nowthen is still the free, easy and addictive way to share your camera phone pics and texts with your friends, family or web at large, but in the last months, our team has been working hard to add features that make the site even more fan-friggin-tastic:

- Make a Profile – Add a profile picture and fill in some info about yourself and interests so users can learn more about you

- Stack o' Polaroids badge/widget – Slap this groovy badge onto your blog, myspace or website to show your visitors your latest nowthen updates. Friends can also text you for free through your badge!

- Set daily "Silent Times" – Admit it: we ALL need our beauty rest. Now you can set daily time periods to silence your friends' nowthen updates. When your Silent Time is over, nowthen will get you caught up with the posts that went up while you were away.

- Create special groups – Categorize your nowthen friends into unique groups (e.g., coworkers, friends, family, etc.) and control who receives certain pics. Trust me; your friends don't want to see stale pics from granny's birthday anymore than your parents want to see your drunken pics from the office Xmas party.

- Comment from your phone – This feature lets you immediately react to your friends' pics wherever you may be. When your friend sends a phone update, just Reply and text "COMMENT [friend's username] [your comment here]". (e.g., "COMMENT Erin What's with the eye patch and peg leg?").

Good times! And that's not even including the new features we're developing right now!

Until then, continue playing with the site, invite your friends, and definitely contact us with any feedback you have!

Take care,

The nowthen.com team
